Carrey hearts McGregor
Last week we posted news about Paul Rudd's new comedy 'I Love You, Man,' now we have word that Ewan McGregor will play the romantic lead opposite Jim Carrey in dark comedy 'I Love you Phillip Morris.' Did Time magazine peg it right when they predicted the emergence of a new sub-genre, Bromance?
Based on the true tale of Steven Russell, a married father who runs afoul of the law, lands in a Texas prison, falls for his roomie, and then escapes four, count 'em 4, times -- once by turning his prison garb into surgical scrubs using only a green pen and bucket of water. Sounds like something Jim Carrey would do.

Huffington Post posted an article yesterday about the right wing press coming out strong against War, Inc. and against John Cusack personally. I was already going to see the movie, since I blog about comedy films (http://www.findthefunnywire.com), but after reading that, I made damn sure to see it as soon as I could. (It added a few theaters this weekend and I caught it in Pasadena.)
Satire is always a tough sell and faces stiff competition from the dick-and-fart jokes that are the current trend in comedy films, but I thought John did a great job of creating something fresh. It had that loose, anarchic New Crime Productions feel that I remember from some of their live theater productions. Music is great, Hillary Duff was surprisingly real and touching, and I especially liked the futuristic look to the world they created. The final escape had a Family Values/Blade Runner sort of feel to it, if you can imagine such a thing. Point is, he did.
Hard to imagine why the right wing zeroed in on this film. Maybe because it's finding an audience and other recent war films didn't? I guess that could be threatening.
