Always a Bridesmaid
We love that The Golden Globes acknowledges that there is a difference between what Cate Blanchett does when she becomes Queen and what Amy Adams does when she bcomes a Fairy Tale Princess. We congratulate this year's nominees for Actress, Musical or Comedy and for Actor, Musical or Comedy. But in such a crowded field, inevitably some fine performances get overlooked.
We are shocked - shocked! - that 'Waitress's Keri Russell didn't get a nom for showing us, with cool honesty, how having an unwanted pregnancy can be funny, and sexy, too. And ditto for Katherine Heijl's work in 'Knocked Up.' In a world where the men (or boys) have taken over the traditionally female territory of Romantic Comedy, Heijl provided that much needed balance, proving that there's more to actresses than just playing "the girl."
And although not billed as a comedy, and maybe box office might have been better if it was, 'Talk to Me' had some of the freshest laughs of the year, all delivered with subversive guile by the amazing Don Cheadle. Who knew he could be funny? Evidently the Spirit Awards noticed his wide-ranging performance; they nominated him for Best Actor.
And what happened to Seth Rogen, the tubby slacker in 'Knocked Up,' who becomes a man by backing into fatherhood? He made us love both his incarnations, what a trick that is!
But most surprising of all, was the lack of a nom for Jason Reitman, director of 'Juno.' He's shown us he has a deft way with difficult subjects, making us laugh, making us think, and making us feel, all at the same time; in this case about teen pregnancy and last year with 'Thank You For Smoking.' He's garnered a Spirit Awards nom for directing, and his movie has just hit theaters, so there's still a possiblility that Oscar may see things differently.
